What is SVOSH?
SVOSH is a University of Houston College of Optometry student organization striving to give a little back to the community and abroad. We are comprised of optometry students and sponsored by UHCO faculty. We involve ourselves primarily through vision screenings locally and internationally, but we are also looking into meeting with local schools to educate kids about their eyes as well.
Mission statement
The mission of the Student Volunteer Optometric Service to humanity is to provide eyecare services to all who need it, especially those who would not normally receive such care, primarily through vision screenings at the local level, eye prescriptions and eyeglasses at the international level, and finally, to assist those patients in gaining access to the needed health care services.
Why should I become a member?
SVOSH will help you to develop a community service oriented relationship with the people of the Houston area--and the WORLD. Every member in SVOSH is important in reaching our goals, which include philanthropy, fundraising, vision screenings at the local level, and prescribing and dispensing eyeglasses at the international level. Such activities are not only fulfilling, but also fun. With SVOSH, you will have the opportunity of meeting many interesting people from a wide variety of backgrounds as well as network with other professional organizations. For example, we are working in a vision screening partnership with the Baylor College of Medicine, which will foster positive working relations between medical and optometric profession. And you now have the ability to get elective credit by being involved in our organizations efforts. At SVOSH, we are dedicated to helping the community and enriching our members' academic lives. So, we would like to welcome you to the world of humanity in optometric care!
